Friday Review: Top favorite things in Divergent by Veronica Roth

The book is over and I am so so sad.   It was such a good book.  As a way of finishing off this book review, I wanted to cover a few of my favorite things in the overall book.

Here we go,

Top 5 favorite quotes:

1. When Tris realizes she is changing in Dauntless: “Looking at myself now isn’t like seeing myself for the first time, it’s like seeing someone else for the first time. Beatrice was a girl I saw in stolen moments at the mirror, who kept quiet at the dinner table. This is someone whose eyes claim mine and don’t release me; this is Tris.” (Roth. Pg. 87.)

2. Tris begins to love being a Dauntless, “If my entire life is like this, loud laughter and bold action and the kind of exhaustion you feel after a hard but satisfying day, I will be content.” (Roth. Pg. 156.)

3. When Four figures out Tris is Divergent, “Don’t play stupid. I suspected it last time, but this time it’s obvious. You manipulated the simulation; you’re Divergent. I’ll delete the footage, but unless you want to wind up dead at the bottom of the chasm, you’ll figure out how to hide it during the simulation! Now, if you’ll excuse me.” (Roth. Pg. 255.)

4. Fours thoughts on selflessness and Bravery, “I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All you’re life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your first instinct. I could belong in Abnegation just as easily.” (Roth. Pg. 336.)

5. When Peter assumes Tris won’t shoot him and Tris says, “People tend to overestimate my character. They think that because I’m small, or a girl, or a Stiff, I can’t possibly be cruel. But they’re wrong.” (Roth. Pg. 463.)  Then Tris shoots him in the arm.

Top 5 favorite moments:

1. When Four and Tris climb the ferris wheel and they bond together. Tris learns he is afraid of heights and learns how he made it through Dauntless initiation.

2. When Tris stays over with Four after she is attacked by Al, Peter and Drew. They have a  cute conversation and you can see the friendship growing.

3. When Four and Tris kiss for the first time after he tells her that he likes everything about her.

4. When Tris and Four are reunited after Tobias was taken over by the simulation.

5. When they escape and stop the simulation.  When Tobias tells her that he loves her.

Overall opinion of the book:

This book was awesome!

Following Tris through her journey has been an amazing ride.  She is a meek, Abnegation girl who didn’t belong, we follow her through her getting to know herself.

She learns bravery, she learns selflessness.  She learns love.

This story is so easy to relate to.  It had me crying, laughing and cheering them on.

The under-toned love story of Tris and Tobias added to a stellar storyline.

I enjoyed getting to know the characters, feeling the emotions that they went through and being left on a cliffhanger not knowing how they will move forward.

Overall, I loved it and I look forward to reading the next book.

I am taking two weeks off from book reviews to organize my game plan.   I will be reviewing “Four: A Divergent Collection.”  It is a book in the eyes of Tobias from the same timeline as Divergent. It has been requested so much that I figured I might as well do it right now 🙂

The review will start on October, 20th, 2014.

Friday Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth. Ch 37-38-39

These are the last three chapters of the book! Ahh, we have finally made it through the entire thing! Whew! Check back this Monday to see my overall feelings/thoughts of the book!

Let’s review the last three chapters,

Brief no-spoiler overview of Chapters 37-38-39:

Erudite and Dauntless are attacking Abnegation.

Tris takes Marcus, her dad and Caleb to the Dauntless headquarters.

Tris has them do things outside their comfort zone.

Dauntless is pretty empty.

Tris runs into Peter and they fight.

Tris pisses off her family.

Tragedy happens.

Tris finds the control room.

She tries to get through to Tobias.

Chaos ensues.

Chapter 37:

Tris’ team picks her.  Her dad, Marcus and Caleb will go with her to Dauntless.

The rest head to Amity, to safety.

Tris instructs them on how to get on the moving train.

Tris is the only one who makes it smoothly, the others land on their stomaches and struggle a bit.

Marcus asks Tris if she regrets choosing Dauntless.

Tris says no because she needed to learn things.

Her dad says, “How to be brave?”  and she responds, “How to be selfless, often they’re the same thing.” (Roth. Pg. 457.)

She tells them that they must jump from the train to the roof like she did in initiation.

Her dad jumps, lands dangerous close to the edge, Marcus misses and dangles from the ledge and Tris and Caleb make it.

Marcus is rescued.

She tells them they must jump down and that there is a net at the bottom.

Caleb lands after Tris, hurting himself, her dad pukes and Marcus is groaning.

They head into the Dauntless compound to find the computer room.

She runs into Peter who isn’t under simulation.

Tris tries to get info from him but he says, “You won’t shoot me.”

Tris says, “People tend to overestimate my character, they think that because I’m small, or a girl, or a Stiff, I can’t possibly be cruel. But they’re wrong.” (Roth. Pg. 463.)

Tris shoots him in the shoulder. Then raises the gun to his head and demands he tell her what she wants to know.

He won’t unless she brings him with her, she concedes.

Tris’ father scolds her for shooting Peter and she said now isn’t the time.

Her father says, “Now is the perfect time, because you will soon get the opportunity to shoot someone again, and if you don’t realize…”

Tris cuts him off, “Realize what? That every second I waste means another Abnegation dead and another Dauntless made into a murderer? I’ve realized that. Now it’s your turn.” (Roth. Pg. 466.)

Tris goes to the glass ceiling, she is about to head up to the stairs and she turns to her father, “There are men with guns up there. When they see me, they will kill me, if they can. Should I let them?” (Roth. Pg. 467.)

Her dad tells her to go and wishes her well.

She defeats several guards and one guard tells her to go, he is Divergent.

She tells the others it’s clear.

Tris tells Caleb and Marcus to stay with Peter at this point and gives them a gun, telling them to keep anyone from following them.

She thinks in her head that the real reason is to keep them safe. Because she probably won’t be coming back down.

Tris and her dad ride the elevator up.  Tris dad says, “Thank you. For protecting Caleb, Beactrice, I…” (Roth. Pg. 470.)

The doors open and two guards are waiting for them.

Tris’ dad shoots them and runs out to get the others away from Tris.

He shoots but he isn’t fast enough, they kill him.

Tris is shattered but she must move forward.

She gets to the computer room and comes face to face with Tobias.

Favorite quotes from chapter thirty-seven:

When Peter assumes Tris won’t shoot him and Tris says, “People tend to overestimate my character. They think that because I’m small, or a girl, or a Stiff, I can’t possibly be cruel. But they’re wrong.” (Roth. Pg. 463.)  Then Tris shoots him in the arm.

Chapter 38:

Tobias looks at Tris and stands.

Tris says, “Tobias, you’re in a simulation.” (Roth. Pg. 473.)

Tris lunges at Tobias, she is kicking him and fighting for her life.

She knows she won’t beat him.  She is just trying to get to the computer.

He grabs her and slams her onto the floor.

She can’t make him stop, she has a gun pointed at him.

She makes a last minute decision of self-sacrifice.

She gives Tobias the gun, he presses it to her forehead.

He clicks the gun into the chamber.

She thinks, “Maybe it will just be a bang, and the lights will lift, and I will find myself in another world. I stand still and wait. Can I be forgiven for all I’ve done to get here? I don’t know.” (Roth. Pg. 476.)

Favorite Quote from chapter thirty-eight:

When Tris tries to get Tobias to see her, “Tobias, please.  Please. See me. Please see me, Tobias, please.” (Roth. Pg. 475.)

Chapter 39:

The shot doesn’t happen.

She hugs Tobias.

He finally says her name.

“Something like a sob and a sigh and a moan escapes him, and he kisses me again. His eyes are bright with tears. I never thought I would see Tobias cry. It makes me hurt.” (Roth. Pg. 478.)

They start to shut down the system because Tris notices Dauntless soldiers surround her brother, Marcus and Peter.  She is watching through the screen.

Tobias stops it and every one stills.

The Dauntless go into chaos. Some sink, sobbing. Some running away.

Tobias gets the information from the system and then wipes it.

Tris looks at her dads body as she walks by.

They get into the elevator and she crouches down to sob.  She counts to five and stands.

They leave, she is looking for Caleb’s face.

She finds him outside.

Tobias sees his father and freezes.

Beatrice yells at Marcus, “The only reason I haven’t shot you yet is because he’s the one who should get to do it. Stay away from him or I’ll decide I no longer care.” (Roth. Pg. 483.)

They move towards the train together, heading to Amity.  Tris and Tobias, hand in hand.

Tobias carries Tris and she thinks about how all her loved ones are dead behind her or waking as murderers.

She thinks about Christina and how she will find out that Will is dead.

They are on the train. Tris says to Tobias, “My parents, they died today. They died for me.” (Roth. Pg. 485.)

He explains that they were just showing their love in the only way they could.

Tobias then says, “I might be in love with you. I’m waiting until I’m sure to tell you, though.”

She tells him that he should make a pros/cons list.

“Maybe, I’m already sure, and I just don’t want to frighten you.”

She tells him that he should know better.

“Fine, then I love you.” (Roth. Page 486.)

The book ends with, “Abnegation and Dauntless are both broken, their members scattered. We are like the factionless now. I do not know what life will be like, separated from a faction- it feels disengaged, like a leaf divided from the tree that gives it sustenance. We are creatures of loss; we have left everything behind. I have no home, no path, and no certainty. I am no longer Tris, the selfless, or Tris, the brave. I suppose that now, I must become more than either.” (Roth. 487.)

Favorite Quote from chapter thirty-nine:

When they are all one the train and Tris is with Tobias again, “I kiss him as the train slides into unlit, uncertain land. I kiss him for as long as I want, for longer than I should, given that my brother sits three feet away from me.” (Roth. Pg. 487.)

Thoughts on Chapter 37-38-39:

Oh my gosh, it’s over. I’m so sad and happy, and just so many tears.

I won’t say much about these three chapters because I will be releasing my overall thoughts this Monday but oh my gosh.

I’m bawling.

Monday Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth. Ch 35-36

Brief no-spoiler overview of Chapters 35-36:

When Tris wakes up, she is in a tank.

She escapes.

Someone saves her.

She continues to run.

Tris loses it momentarily.

She keeps moving forward.

Tris kills people in an effort to survive.

Tris kills someone close to her.

She loses it loudly for a second.

She meets up with her dad and Caleb.

They fix her up.

They make a plan.

Chapter 35:

Tris wakes up with an extremely sore head.  She finds herself in an enclosed space.

She is in a tank, being watched by a camera.

She realizes this is like the simulation but it’s real life now.

Her arm is numb and she sees how much blood she has lost.

She tries to get out, panicking but realizes quickly that they are studying her through the camera.

“I am not a coward, I lift my head and stare at the camera across from me. I focus on my breathing. I can forget that I’m about to die. I stare at the camera until my vision narrows and it is all I see.” (Roth. Pg. 438.)

The water is at her ankles and she mentally prepares herself, remaining as calm as possible.

She is submerged underwater, she is drowning but she thinks about her father and she is no longer afraid.  She opens her eyes.

Theres a figure standing outside the tank.

The figure smashes the glass, it’s Tris’ mom and she tells her that they have to run.

They run down the hallways and as they do Tris’ mom shoots two guards in the head.

Tris notices a tattoo peeking out of her moms shirt.

Tris asks her mom if she was Dauntless and her mom says, “Yes, and it has served me well today. Your father and Caleb and some others are hiding in a basement at the intersection of North and Fairfield. We have to go there.” (Roth. Pg. 440.)

Tris mom explains that she is Divergent too and why the leaders don’t like it, ” Every faction conditions its members to think and act a certain way. And most people do it. For most people, it’s not hard to learn, to find a pattern of thought that works and stay that way. But our minds move in a dozen different directions. We can’t be confined to one way of thinking, and that terrifies our leaders. It means we can’t be controlled. And it means that no matter what they do, we will always cause trouble for them.” (Roth. Pg. 442.)

Groups of Dauntless are approaching them.

Her mom tells her that she will distract them and Tris is to run to her father.

They exchange I love you’s and when Tris looks back she sees her mom get shot.

She watches as she falls to the ground and screams into her hand.

Tris falls to the ground and is completely overcome with sadness.

She sees Dauntless and somehow, she gets up and starts to run again.

Tris explains that the Dauntless have no idea what they are doing and the Abnegation people feel sorry for them sparking Tris’ game plan.

She explains that they will have to wake them up so they will revolt against Erudite and Dauntless.

She figures out that it is being controlled from Dauntless headquarters and her dad looks to her to who she wants to take with her and who should go on to Amity.

Tris answers, “Anyone who can and will fire a gun, and isn’t afraid of heights.

Favorite quotes from chapter thirty-five:

When Tris’ mom explains why she saved her, “You’re my daughter. I don’t care about the faction. Look where they got us. Human beings as a whole cannot be good for long before the bad creeps back in and poisons us again.” (Roth. Pg. 441.)

Chapter 36:

Dauntless are trailing Tris, she narrowly escapes being shot again.

She uses the pain from them killing her mom to keep her moving and shooting at them.

Tris goes to shoot at the second Dauntless, she squeezes the trigger but doesn’t fire.

It’s Will.

He stops, raises his gun, starts to push the trigger and Tris shoots.

Eyes closed but gets him right in the head.

She gets down on the ground in an alley and screams.

She is crying and messed up about killing Will, “He smiles in my memory. A curled lip. Straight teeth. Light in his eyes. Laughing, teasing, more alive in memory than I am in reality. It was him or me. I chose me. But I feel dead too.” (Roth. Pg. 446.)

Tris gets to the basement, Caleb greets her.

He tells her he did the research mom wanted and then left Erudite.

Her dad removes the bullet and stitches her up.

Tris delivers the news about her mom and her dad momentarily looks so sad but catches himself saying, “That is good. A good death.” (Roth. Pg. 451.)

Tris thinks about how Eric said that Al’s suicide was brave but Tris thinks her mom’s was braver.

She did it without announcing it, without considering another option and with the intention of pure love.

Tris prepares to save all these people, Marcus (Tobias’ dad.)  speaks up about heading to Amity for safety.

Favorite Quote from chapter thirty-six:

Tris’ plan to save them, “If we wake the Dauntless up, they will probably revolt when they realize what’s going on. The Erudite won’t have an army. The Abnegation will stop dying. This will be over.” (Roth. Pg. 453.)

Thoughts on Chapter 35-36:

Talk about fears coming to life!

Tris almost drowns in a tank of water but her mom saves her, sacrifices her life for her.

She killed Will.

The next step is to stop Erudite with her father and Caleb.

This book is getting intense.

Friday Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth. Ch 33-34

Brief no-spoiler overview of Chapters 33-34:

Tris tries to get to Tobias after rankings are released but she can’t.

Tris wakes up in the middle of the night and notices everyone getting up.

She follows.

She has no idea whats going on.

They grab guns.

Eric taunts Four.

Four and Tris are taken to Abnegation headquarters.

They get terrible news.

Tris is in trouble.

Chapter 33:

Tris tries to get to Tobias after the rankings were released but she can’t.

She falls asleep before she can sneak out to see him.

She is awakened by Christina and the rest of the Dauntless robotically getting dressed with eyes that stare into the distance.

Tris tries to talk to them but they don’t respond.

Tris hurries to get ready so she isn’t left behind.

Max (a Dauntless leader) is in the pit watching them all. Tris does her best to walk like the rest of them and stare vacantly.

They march and pick up weapons. Tris thinks, “Of course, Eric said every Dauntless was injected yesterday. So now the entire faction is brain-dead, obedient, and trained to kill. Perfect soldiers.” (Roth. Pg. 418.)

Tris makes a game plan, she will pretend until she gets to Abnegation and then find her family.

All the Dauntless leaders are awake while every one else is under mind control. Tris thinks about how Tobias may be awake unless she is wrong about him being Divergent.

They march to the train and jump onto the train.

A boy helps Tris on robotically and she notices that it is Tobias and that he is blank faced.

They are standing in rows, close together and Tris feels someone squeezing her hand, it’s Tobias.  He’s awake. He’s Divergent.

A short conversation before they jump of the train at Abnegation occurs,

Tobias says, “Run.”

While Tris says, “My family.”  (Roth. Pg. 421.)

Dauntless scatter across Abnegation. As Tobias and Tris walk robotically through Abnegation they hear sharp popping sounds.

As they walk, it gets louder.  Tris watches as a blind Tori shoots an Abnegation councilman for no reason.

Tris thinks, “All the Abnegation will die if this continues.” (Roth. Pg. 423.)

Eric stops Tris and Tobias and he is explaining to a Dauntless leader how the simulation works.  That they can see and hear but can’t process the information while under the simulation.

He then says, “The legendary Four. No one is going to remember I came in second now, are they? No one’s going to ask me, ‘What was it like to train with the guy who only has four fears?’ He draws his gun and points it at Tobias’ right temple. ‘Think anyone would notice if he accidentally got shot?'” (Roth. Pg. 424.)

The woman says to go ahead and Eric clicks a bullet into the gun.

Tris raises her gun and says, “Get your gun away from his head.”  and Eric replies, “You won’t shoot me.” (Roth. Pg. 424.)

Tris chooses not to murder him but instead shoots him in the foot.

Tobias and Tris run for the alley but as they do Tris hears a gun shot, she gets hit in the shoulder.

Tobias stops to help her and they are surrounded.

Eric says, “Divergent rebels, surrender your weapons.” (Roth. Pg. 425.)

Favorite quotes from chapter thirty-three:

When Tris realizes that Tobias is Divergent, “People crowd into the car around me, so we stand in four rows, shoulder-to-shoulder. And then something peculiar happens: fingers lace with mine, and a palm presses to my palm. Tobias, holding my hand. My entire body is alive with energy.  I squeeze his hand and he squeezes back. He is awake. I was right.” (Roth. Pg. 420.)

Chapter 34:

Tris is leaning on Tobias for support as they are led by gunpoint into Abnegation headquarters.

Jeanine is at a desk on the phone when they are shuffled in.

Jeanine speaks of them being Divergent. She addresses Tris first, “You, I expected. All the trouble with you aptitude test results made me suspicious from the beginning but you, Tobias…managed to elude me, everything about you checked out, test results, initiation simulations, everything. But here you are nonetheless.” (Roth. Pg. 427.)

Tobias trades snarky remarks with Jeanine.

Jeanine explains that she always wondered why weak-willed Abnegations always seemed to be Divergent.  She also told Tobias that Abnegation wasn’t innocent bringing up his father. Tobias responded, “No, but at least his evil didn’t involve the widespread manipulation of an entire faction and the systematic murder of every political leader we have.” (Roth. Pg. 430.)

Jeanine ignores him and explains that she has developed a new serum that could possibly work on Divergents as well. She explains that this one instead of controlling their will, will instead control how they hear/see their surroundings forcing them to change their will.

Jeanine says, “You will be the first test subject, Tobias. Beatrice, however…you are too injured to be of much use to me, so your execution will occur at the conclusion of this meeting.” (Roth. Pg. 432.)

Tobias says no and then kisses Tris hard on the mouth.  They forget where they are for a moment.

Then without warning Tobias lunges at Jeanine and tries to strangle her.

Dauntless guards tackle Tris and Tobias.  Then Jeanine injects Tobias with the serum.

Tris tries to talk to Tobias but he tries to attack her.

Jeanine explains that the serum makes him confuse enemy with friend.

The chapter ends with Tris,

“They drag me down the hallway, I feel numb inside, but outside I am a screaming, thrashing force of will. I bite a hand that belongs to the Dauntless man on my right and smile when I taste blood. Then he hits me, and there is nothing.” (Roth. Pg. 435.)

Favorite Quote from chapter thirty-four:

When Jeanine sentences Tris to death, “You will be the first test subject, Tobias. Beatrice however. You are too injured to be of much use to me, so your execution will occur at the conclusion of this meeting.” (Roth. Pg. 432.)

Thoughts on Chapter 33-34:

Oh my goodness, war.

Tris was right. Tobias was right. Erudite is going to take out Abnegation.

Mind control madness. Tris is in trouble.

I’m scared, nervous and excited to keep reading.

Monday Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth. Ch 31-32

Brief no-spoiler overview of Chapters 31-32:

Tris comes out of her fear landscape.

She gets congratulated and told she has finished it successfully.

Eric injects her with a new syringe that is for tracking.

Tris and Tobias have a big discussion about their relationship.

Tris and her friends talk about rankings, fears and laugh together.

They all find out the rankings and Tris comes to a shocking realization.

Chapter 31:

Tris wakes up from the fear landscape simulation and tries to calm down.

Tris recalls her fear landscape and thinks about how she could never do it in her spare time, “It seemed like bravery to me but now it seems like more like masochism.” (Roth. Pg. 397.)

Max, Eric and Tobias come in and congratulate her on successfully finishing her final test.

Eric tells her she needs to be injected with a tracking device.

Tris wonders how many people get lost and he says it’s just a precaution and it’s newly developed by Erudite.

Eric tells her the banquet is in two hours and she will find out her ranking then.

Four pulls her aside and says that he heard she only had seven fears.

Tris is thankful that Four didn’t see her fear landscape.

They are in Four’s room and Four asks her if she’s okay and kisses her.

As he kisses her, he slips her jacket off.  Tris freaks out and shoves him away.

Angry at herself and covers her eyes.

Tris opens up about her insecurities and how she isn’t ready to have sex yet.

Tobias responds, “Tris, I don’t know what delusion you’re operating under, but this is all new to me, too.” (Roth, Pg. 402.)

Tris shows him her Abnegation tattoo and Four says he has the same one.

He has every one of the Faction symbols on his back.

He explains, “I think we’ve made a mistake, we’ve all started to put down the virtues of the other factions in the process of bolstering  our own. I don’t want to do that. I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest.” (Roth. Pg. 405.)

Tobias asks if she is scared of his shirtless-ness and she says no.

He takes her hands and guides it to his stomach.

He says, “Someday, if you still want me, we can…we can…” (Roth. Pg. 406.)

Tris then asks if he is afraid too and he agrees that he is.

Tris says to him that maybe he won’t be in her fears anymore and he says, “Then everyone can call you six.” (Roth. Pg. 407.)

Tris responds, “Four and Six.” (Roth. Pg. 407.)

Favorite quotes from chapter thirty-one:

Tris and Fours conversation:

Tris: “Are you afraid of me too, Tobias?”

Four: “Terrified.”  (Roth. Pg. 406.)

Chapter 32:

Tris is in the cafeteria with her friends after cuddling, sleeping, and talking with Four for two hours.

Tris notices that Four smiles a lot more now.

Christina wonders where Tris has been and Tris quickly says she was just wandering around.

They talk about rankings and what jobs they want to do.

Tris admits that she had a fear of intimacy but says it was about a “faceless” man.

They all turn their attention to the ranking and the ranking is as follows,

1. Tris

2. Uriah

3. Lynn

4. Marlene

5. Peter

6. Will

7. Christina

They have all made it!

Tris thinks about how Drew and Molly are now factionless and even though Peter got through, it is good enough that those two are out.

Will and Christina get sloppy together.

Four asks Tris, “You think giving you a hug would give away too much?” (Roth. Pg 414.)

Tris says she doesn’t care and kisses him.

Four brushes a finger across the injection site on her neck and Tris realizes something important.

Colored serum, simulation, Erudite and Eric working with them.

She breaks the kiss with Four and he notices something wrong.

She tells him to meet her later.

The chapter ends with Tris thinking, “But I do know how Erudite will get us to fight.” (Roth. Pg. 415.)

Favorite Quote from chapter thirty-two:

When they find out they are in, “I forgot about war. I forget death. Will’s arms wrap around me and gives me a bear hug. I hear cheering and laughing and shouting. Christina points at the screen, her wide eyes filled with tears.” (Roth. Pg. 413.)

Thoughts on Chapter 31-32:

I absolutely love these chapters.

It is awesome to find out that Tris has made it.

Tobias and Tris are getting so serious.

Tris has finally figured out Erudite’s plan.

Ahh!  What are they going to do!

Friday Review: Divergent by Veronica Roth. Ch 29-30

Brief no-spoiler overview of Chapters 29-30:

It’s the day of the final initiation day and Tris is so nervous.

Tris sees the new Dauntless initiates.

She eats lunch in the dorm.

She thinks about her fear landscape.

The initiates go through one by one, Tris is close to last.

Tris is next.

Tris faces her fear landscape and struggles a bit.

A new fear throws her off.

The last fear, Tris finds a new way to face it.

Chapter 29:

Tris thinks about Abnegation initiation and how calm it is.

Dauntless is chaos with the new initiates.

She grabs her lunch and goes to the quiet dormitory.

Tris is trying to figure out how to warn her former faction of the impending war.

She eats robotically thinking about how she will be an official Dauntless soon.

The fear landscape final test has begun.

Tris hears cheering, she notes that the initiates can’t see the fears, just the leaders and the person experiencing them.

There are no seats left and Uriah calls to her, “You can sit on my lap, if ya want.” (Roth. Pg. 381.)

Tris responds, “Tempting, it’s fine. I like to stand.” (Roth. Pg. 381.)

Tris will go last since she ranked first. She will watch everyone go first.

She hears her name and Eric says, “Ready?” (Roth. Pg. 383.)

Favorite quotes from chapter twenty-nine:

Tris thinking about the factions, “I eat like a robot, rotating from chicken to peas to bread and back again. It doesn’t matter what faction I really belong in.  In two hours I will walk to the fear landscape room with the other initiates, go through my fear landscape, and become Dauntless. It’s too late to turn back.” (Roth. Pg. 379.)

Chapter 30:

The simulation begins.

Tris realizes that each fear symbolizes something.

She has a game plan, thanks to Tobias.

The first fear is her original crows attacking her.

She thinks this is about control. She wants to have a gun, she is searching the ground, she wants to show she is powerful.

She finds the gun and shoots the bird continuing to shoot until the fear ends.

Next up is the tank of water. She believes that this is about weakness.

So she convinces herself she is strong enough to break the glass.

It doesn’t work, she panics for a second.

She chants in her head, “The glass is ice, the glass is ice, the glass is…” (Roth. Pg. 386.)

It breaks and the fear ends.

The new fear is drowning in the sea. She can’t control it, that’s her fear.

She throws herself at the rocks, she lands and runs before a wave gets her. The fear ends abruptly.

The next fear is being burned at the stake. She is tied to the wood and Peter shows up with some initiates. He lights it on fire.

The conversation with Peter goes like this,

Peter: “Smell that, Stiff? That’s the smell of your burning flesh.”

Tris: “Know what I smell?…I smell rain.” (Roth. Pg. 389.)

Thunder rolls and rain falls. She smiles and the fear ends.

The next fear is of Peter, Al and Drew kidnapping her but in the landscape, the people are faceless.

She chants that this is just a simulation and slides the mirror and grabs a weapon. She aims the gun and fires at the faceless men.

There is screeching on glass and it shatters, she doesn’t have enough bullets and zombie like humans come after her.

She decides to calm herself instead and the fear ends quickly.

The next fear is Tobias.

Tobias kisses her and slowly takes off her jacket.

She realizes her fear is of being with him.

She thinks: “This is what I can’t cope with? This is the fear I have no solutions for-a boy I like who wants to…have sex with me?” (Roth. Pg. 393.)

She takes control of the situation by saying, “I am not going to sleep with you in a hallucination okay?” (Roth. Pg. 394.)

She pushes him into the bedpost and kisses him. The fear ends.

The next fear starts, her family appears.

A woman who sounds like Jeanine tells her to shoot them while pressing a gun to Tris’ forehead.

Tris notes her worst fear, “My family will die and I will be responsible.” (Roth. Pg. 395.)

Her family tells her to do it selflessly.

She lifts her gun, she tries to convince herself to do it.

She thinks of what Tobias said, “Selflessness and bravery aren’t that different.” (Roth. 395.)

She drops her gun and faces the barrel, “Shoot me instead.” (Roth. Pg. 396.)

Favorite Quote from chapter thirty:

When Tris realizes her new fear is Four, “My fear is being with him. I have been wary of affection all my life, but I didn’t know how deep the wariness went.” (Roth. Pg.393.)

Thoughts on Chapter 29-30:

These chapters were short and suspenseful.

I like the fact that she is so nervous but knows there is nothing she can do about it.

Then the fear landscape is insane, I laughed out loud at the new fear of Four.

All the leaders got to see that!

I can’t wait to read on. To see if she made it or not.
