Tris has them do things outside their comfort zone.

Dauntless is pretty empty.

Tragedy happens.

She tries to get through to Tobias.

Chaos ensues.

Chapter 37:

Summary:

Tris’ team picks her.  Her dad, Marcus and Caleb will go with her to Dauntless.

The rest head to Amity, to safety.

Tris instructs them on how to get on the moving train.

Tris is the only one who makes it smoothly, the others land on their stomaches and struggle a bit.

Marcus asks Tris if she regrets choosing Dauntless.

Tris says no because she needed to learn things.

Her dad says, “How to be brave?”  and she responds, “How to be selfless, often they’re the same thing.” (Roth. Pg. 457.)

She tells them that they must jump from the train to the roof like she did in initiation.

Her dad jumps, lands dangerous close to the edge, Marcus misses and dangles from the ledge and Tris and Caleb make it.

Marcus is rescued.

She tells them they must jump down and that there is a net at the bottom.

Caleb lands after Tris, hurting himself, her dad pukes and Marcus is groaning.

They head into the Dauntless compound to find the computer room.

She runs into Peter who isn’t under simulation.

Tris tries to get info from him but he says, “You won’t shoot me.”

Tris says, “People tend to overestimate my character, they think that because I’m small, or a girl, or a Stiff, I can’t possibly be cruel. But they’re wrong.” (Roth. Pg. 463.)

Tris shoots him in the shoulder. Then raises the gun to his head and demands he tell her what she wants to know.

He won’t unless she brings him with her, she concedes.

Tris’ father scolds her for shooting Peter and she said now isn’t the time.

Her father says, “Now is the perfect time, because you will soon get the opportunity to shoot someone again, and if you don’t realize…”

Tris cuts him off, “Realize what? That every second I waste means another Abnegation dead and another Dauntless made into a murderer? I’ve realized that. Now it’s your turn.” (Roth. Pg. 466.)

Tris goes to the glass ceiling, she is about to head up to the stairs and she turns to her father, “There are men with guns up there. When they see me, they will kill me, if they can. Should I let them?” (Roth. Pg. 467.)

Her dad tells her to go and wishes her well.

She defeats several guards and one guard tells her to go, he is Divergent.

She tells the others it’s clear.

Tris tells Caleb and Marcus to stay with Peter at this point and gives them a gun, telling them to keep anyone from following them.

She thinks in her head that the real reason is to keep them safe. Because she probably won’t be coming back down.

Tris and her dad ride the elevator up.  Tris dad says, “Thank you. For protecting Caleb, Beactrice, I…” (Roth. Pg. 470.)

The doors open and two guards are waiting for them.

Tris’ dad shoots them and runs out to get the others away from Tris.

He shoots but he isn’t fast enough, they kill him.

Tris is shattered but she must move forward.

She gets to the computer room and comes face to face with Tobias.

Favorite quotes from chapter thirty-seven:

When Peter assumes Tris won’t shoot him and Tris says, “People tend to overestimate my character. They think that because I’m small, or a girl, or a Stiff, I can’t possibly be cruel. But they’re wrong.” (Roth. Pg. 463.)  Then Tris shoots him in the arm.

Chapter 38:

Summary:

Tobias looks at Tris and stands.

Tris says, “Tobias, you’re in a simulation.” (Roth. Pg. 473.)

Tris lunges at Tobias, she is kicking him and fighting for her life.

She knows she won’t beat him.  She is just trying to get to the computer.

He grabs her and slams her onto the floor.

She can’t make him stop, she has a gun pointed at him.

She makes a last minute decision of self-sacrifice.

She gives Tobias the gun, he presses it to her forehead.

He clicks the gun into the chamber.

She thinks, “Maybe it will just be a bang, and the lights will lift, and I will find myself in another world. I stand still and wait. Can I be forgiven for all I’ve done to get here? I don’t know.” (Roth. Pg. 476.)

Favorite Quote from chapter thirty-eight:

When Tris tries to get Tobias to see her, “Tobias, please.  Please. See me. Please see me, Tobias, please.” (Roth. Pg. 475.)

Chapter 39:

Summary:

The shot doesn’t happen.

She hugs Tobias.

He finally says her name.

“Something like a sob and a sigh and a moan escapes him, and he kisses me again. His eyes are bright with tears. I never thought I would see Tobias cry. It makes me hurt.” (Roth. Pg. 478.)

They start to shut down the system because Tris notices Dauntless soldiers surround her brother, Marcus and Peter.  She is watching through the screen.

Tobias stops it and every one stills.

The Dauntless go into chaos. Some sink, sobbing. Some running away.

Tobias gets the information from the system and then wipes it.

Tris looks at her dads body as she walks by.

They get into the elevator and she crouches down to sob.  She counts to five and stands.

They leave, she is looking for Caleb’s face.

She finds him outside.

Tobias sees his father and freezes.

Beatrice yells at Marcus, “The only reason I haven’t shot you yet is because he’s the one who should get to do it. Stay away from him or I’ll decide I no longer care.” (Roth. Pg. 483.)

They move towards the train together, heading to Amity.  Tris and Tobias, hand in hand.

Tobias carries Tris and she thinks about how all her loved ones are dead behind her or waking as murderers.

She thinks about Christina and how she will find out that Will is dead.

They are on the train. Tris says to Tobias, “My parents, they died today. They died for me.” (Roth. Pg. 485.)

He explains that they were just showing their love in the only way they could.

Tobias then says, “I might be in love with you. I’m waiting until I’m sure to tell you, though.”

She tells him that he should make a pros/cons list.

“Maybe, I’m already sure, and I just don’t want to frighten you.”

She tells him that he should know better.

“Fine, then I love you.” (Roth. Page 486.)

The book ends with, “Abnegation and Dauntless are both broken, their members scattered. We are like the factionless now. I do not know what life will be like, separated from a faction- it feels disengaged, like a leaf divided from the tree that gives it sustenance. We are creatures of loss; we have left everything behind. I have no home, no path, and no certainty. I am no longer Tris, the selfless, or Tris, the brave. I suppose that now, I must become more than either.” (Roth. 487.)

Favorite Quote from chapter thirty-nine:

When they are all one the train and Tris is with Tobias again, “I kiss him as the train slides into unlit, uncertain land. I kiss him for as long as I want, for longer than I should, given that my brother sits three feet away from me.” (Roth. Pg. 487.)

Thoughts on Chapter 37-38-39:

Oh my gosh, it’s over. I’m so sad and happy, and just so many tears.

I won’t say much about these three chapters because I will be releasing my overall thoughts this Monday but oh my gosh.

I’m bawling.

Cheers,
