**SPOILER ALERT AHEAD: IN DETAIL DISCUSSION OF CH 27-28**
Tris wakes up in an excellent mood and wears her best outfit, one that shows off her tattoos.
Her friends take notice and Christina is suspicious. Will says, “Let the girl be in a good mood, you may never see it again.” (Roth. Pg. 339.)
They enter the dinning room and when Tris realizes that Tobias is ignoring her, her mood deflates.
They take about the fear landscape today and how they will be going into an instructors landscape to practise before they face their own.
Christina wants it to be Four’s but Tris slams that idea down internally thinking that because of his fear of his father, means he won’t show everyone.
It will be Lauren’s landscape, she assigns one fear to each initiate and they take turns getting through it. Tris must face kidnapping.
Lauren’s fear morphs into Tris’ nightmare from when she was almost killed. She absolutely loses it.
Tobias stops the simulation and yells at her. Tris gets so mad that she slaps him across the face and says, “Shut up.” (Roth. Pg. 345.)
She walks out of the room and the chapter ends.
Favorite quotes from chapter twenty-seven:
Christina’s comment about what she thinks Four’s fears are, “Like you don’t want to know what his fears are. He acts so tough that he’s probably afraid of marshmallows and really bright sunrises or something. Overcompensating.” (Roth. Pg. 341.)
Tris goes outside, she hasn’t been out there in a while.
She thinks her little freak out convinced Peter and everyone else that she isn’t a threat.
She turns to the train and thinks about how she wants to go home but can’t.
She heads to Erudite to see Caleb instead, she knows she will be in trouble for leaving without supervision.
Tris thinks about how each faction member in Erudite must wear at least one article of blue because it creates a calm atmosphere.
Tris finds it too bright here, she has become accustomed to the dim light of Dauntless.
The main Erudite building is a library, there is a huge picture of Jeanine on the wall.
Tris finds Caleb and they rush off to find a “private” place to talk.
Tris tells Caleb that she wants to go home and Caleb scolds her.
Then Caleb tells her that something big is about to happen but he doesn’t know what.
Jeanine has been talking about corrupt Abnegation every day.
Caleb doesn’t know who to believe, Abnegation or Erudite.
Tris looses it, “Yeah. How could I possibly know what a corrupt faction looks like? I’m just training to be Dauntless, for God’s sake. At least I know what I’m part of, Caleb. You are choosing to ignore what we’ve known all our lives-these people are arrogant and greedy and they will lead you nowhere.” (Roth. Pg. 354.)
Caleb asks her to leave and Tris tells him that their mom wants him to research the simulation serum. He is shocked that she came to see Tris and asks why she hadn’t come to him.
Tris says, “Because, the Erudite don’t let the Abnegation into their compound anymore. Wasn’t that information available to you?” (Roth. Pg. 354-355.)
Then she leaves, two Erudite men stop her and take her with them.
They take Tris to Jeanine who is asking her about her test results. Tris realizes that Jeanine is the one who is hunting for Dauntless, she is the one who hired Eric. She is the one that Tris is suppose to avoid.
Jeanine is acting suspicious and Tris is getting worried that Jeanine suspects she is Divergent.
Tris starts acting, she says maybe it is because she got sick both times and then acts really cocky when she asks how she is getting so good at the simulation.
Tris finishes her Dauntless act saying, “You want to know why I chose Dauntless? It’s because I was bored. I was tired of being a wussy little do-gooder and I wanted out.” (Roth. Pg. 359.)
Jeanine asks her if Tris agrees with the articles being released about Abnegation and Tris lies by saying yes.
Tris is driven back to Dauntless and met by Eric.
Eric screams at her and calls her a traitor.
Tris thinks, “For the first time, I recognize Eric for what he is: an Erudite disguised as a Dauntless, a genius as well as a sadist, hunter of the Divergent.” (Roth. Pg. 362.)
Eric tells her that if she can’t explain then he will reconsider her friends ranks in Dauntless.
Tobias walks in, and says that Tris is foolish and that she doesn’t need to be interrogated.
Tris pinches herself to make her look like she is crying, she said that she was embarrassed because of something and Tobias steps in and says that she tried to, “kiss me, and I rejected her, and she went running off like a five-year-old. There’s really nothing to blame her for but her stupidity.” (Roth. Pg. 364.)
Eric laughs too loud and hard at this, then says fine leaving them alone together.
Tobias asks if she is alright and she snaps, “Well, first I got reamed out in front of everyone, and then I had to chat with the woman who’s trying to destroy my old faction, and then Eric almost tossed my friends out of Dauntless, so yeah, it’s shaping up to be a pretty great day, Four.” (Roth. Pg. 365.)
“Why do you even care? You can be either cruel instructor or concerned boyfriend, you can’t play both parts at the same time.” (Roth. 365-367.)
Tobias explains that he was trying to protect her by acting that way this morning because of the repercussions it would have if people found out they were together. He explains that he often forgets that he can hurt her.
Tris kisses him and says, “You’re brilliant you know that? You always know exactly what to do.” (Roth. Pg. 367.)
They choose to meet up later tonight, Christina asks where Tris has been all day and asks if she got in trouble for hitting Four.
Tris says that she just walked around all day and that all she did was get yelled at.
Christina tells her that Will kissed her and they go into total girl gossip mode.
Christina says that she didn’t expect to fall for anyone so soon.
They talk about missing their old factions and how much manipulation there is in Dauntless.
Tris thinks about how many secrets she know has to keep quiet about and how stressful it is.
Christina stops abruptly and screams because of a tiny moth and they laugh together.
Tobias and Tris meet up and catch the train to the middle of nowhere so they know that no one will overhear them.
They have a heart throbbing make-out session on the train but it is very tasteful and cute.
When they get off the train, they are in a spot where the lights are on but no one is around.
Tobias says, “Two things you should know about me. The first is that I am deeply suspicious of people in general. It is my nature to expect the worst of them. And the second is that I am unexpectedly good with computers.” (Roth. Pg. 375.)
Tobias explains that before training he found secure Dauntless files that looked like war plans. War on Abnegation.
They are planning to overthrow the government, he explains that Erudite and Dauntless has teamed up.
Tris catches on fast, “They are going to use us.” (Roth. Pg. 376.)
They both try to figure out how they will make them fight but come up with nothing and the chapter ends.
Favorite Quote from chapter twenty-eight:
When Tobias explains why he was mean to her during the fear simulation, “I didn’t think it would affect you this way. Sometimes I forget that I can hurt you.” (Roth. Pg. 366.)
Thoughts on Chapter 27-28:
I loved these chapters, they really show how close Tris is with Tobias.
Also how strong her relationship with Christina has become.
The findings by Tobias and Tris about the war on Abnegation is terrifying.
I can’t wait to read what happens next.
